“Mom, I’m Trans.” What Would You Say?

Hi there,

What would you do if your child told you something that scared you?

Not because they’d done anything wrong — but because you didn’t understand… and you were terrified of how the world might treat them.

That’s exactly where Dr. Lulu found herself.

In this week’s episode, I sat down with Dr. Lulu — a pediatrician, parent coach, gender and sexuality educator, and a proud mom of a transgender child.

But her story isn’t neat and tidy. She didn’t always respond with the understanding and love she’s now known for. In fact, she shares how she was once her child’s first bully, not out of hate, but out of fear.

And that’s exactly why this conversation is so powerful.

Dr. Lulu gets real about:

  • Growing up queer in a deeply religious and homophobic culture
  • How she first reacted when her child came out as nonbinary and later transgender
  • The difference between accepting your child and truly affirming them
  • Why parental support is one of the biggest protectors against mental health struggles for LGBTQ+ youth

This episode is for any parent who wants to love their child well, even if they're still learning how.

If this topic feels uncomfortable, I encourage you to lean in. You don’t have to get everything right to be the parent your child needs; you just have to be willing to learn and grow.

And Dr. Lulu is here to help us do just that.

Sending you so much love,
Cynthia

P.S. Dr. Lulu’s book About Your Black Transgender Child is packed with honest answers to the questions so many parents are too afraid to ask out loud. Be sure to check it out!
